Arabic, the language of the Qur’an, is essential for deepening understanding of Islam and strengthening faith.
Allah (سبحانه وتعالى) said in the Qur’an:
“Verily, We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’an in order that you may understand.”
[Surah Yusuf: 12:2]
The sahaba and early generations of Islam emphasized Arabic as the key to preserving knowledge and understanding the deen:
Umar ibn al-Khattab (رضي الله عنه):
“Learn the Arabic language, for it increases your nobility.”
Imam al-Shafi’i (رحمه الله):
“The people did not become ignorant and did not differ except because they abandoned the Arabic language.”
Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله):
“The Arabic language itself is part of the religion, and knowing it is an obligation.”
[Iqtida’ al-Sirat al-Mustaqim]
Shu’bah ibn al-Hajjaj (رحمه الله):
“Learn the Arabic language, for it increases your intellect.”
